Pennsylvania Abrupted Placenta Attorneys

According to medical statistics, placental abruption occurs in approximately one out of every hundred births. This unfortunate circumstance can have long-term effects on the health of both mother and baby and results in a mortality rate for the fetus of approximately 25% to 40%.

Causes of placental abruption

The placental lining can detach from the mother's uterus for a number of reasons. Risk factors include infection, hypertension in the mother, previous abruption, and a less-than-normal length umbilical cord. Blunt physical trauma – such as occurs in auto accidents or falls - can also cause placental separation.

Symptoms

Women suffering the condition may experience pain in the stomach, abdominal region, and uterus; nonstop contractions; and, in some cases, bleeding directly from the vagina. In the mildest cases (classified as “Grade 0”), the mother lacks all symptoms and physicians can only diagnose the abruption after the birth has taken place. In the most severe cases (classified as “Grade 3”), the fetus may die, and the mother may go into shock or suffer other complications.

Treatments

Women can lessen all likelihood of the condition by eating a healthy and varied diet, sleeping well, and taking supplements of folic acid. After the condition has been diagnosed, doctors may attempt to perform a caesarian section, replace blood plasma, or treat the patient with Rhogam.

Long-term consequences for a mother and child

Depending on the severity of the placental separation, the long-term effects can range from minimal or fatal. If the mother experiences problems clotting, a hysterectomy may be necessary. The mother may also require a transfusion of blood and treatment for shock and extreme pain. The newborn child might suffer from irregular blood pressure, brain damage, oxygen deprivation, or eating and respiratory issues.
